near-daily affirmation, 05/30/14

It is Friday, and since most of this week’s affirmations have been about coffee, in one way or another, why buck a good trend?

So today, leaving the house early with the plan to get, yes, coffee (dark roast redeye, largest size) on my way into work, I pull into the car line at a Starbucks.

Immediately, I am pinned in, regretting that I did not park and just go inside, since you never know how well the line will move. But then things seem to be progressing at a decent pace, so, yippee, no worries. Until, that is. Until I am next in line to the window. And then the whole dynamic of server-customer interaction goes all to hell; activity reaches a standstill. And I’m sitting. And starting to stew. And still sitting. And stewing. And ultimately going from being a few minutes early to work with my happy coffee in hand to knowing there’s no way I’m now not going to be a few minutes late, grrrrr, everything, even coffee, be damned. And yet I’m really trying to be less of a jerk about things that go awry in my day, because, well, I just am. So I’m smiling, trying to, anyway, at the server guy once I finally advance to the window, my hand out, money extended, insistent, take the cash, speed it up, let’s go, thanks!

He shakes his head, no. “You had to wait a really long time this morning,” he says. “Today’s coffee’s on us.”

Oh. Um. I see. Well. OK.

It’s tough to be but so ticked off at the world when someone hands you a free high-dollar java along with an apology. Not that the first item wouldn’t have gone down plenty well even without the second …
